“HAPPY
TRAINING” for “LOOSE LEASH CONTROL”
How many of us
have watched a handler gaiting around the ring, with
their dog looking like they are walking on their
hind legs, front feet barely touching the ground?
“Not my dog” you
say. Well, if this sounds familiar, perhaps you
might benefit by some fun heeling practice!
You don’t need a
lot of time, just a few minutes a day will work
wonders.
If your dog is
accustomed to the “clicker” all the better. When
he/she hears the click, then receives a treat
immediately, the chances are, that with repetition,
he/she will repeat the behavior that earned the
click/treat response.
A leash is not
necessary, if you are in a protected area. Just
wander around, armed with your clicker and a pocket
full of treats (just little ones remember).
Have an imaginary
circle that you want your dog in, and as soon as
he/she is in that area, click and immediately
treat. Repeat this “every” time he/she is in your
“circle”. Gradually decrease your “circle” until
your dog is at heel position. Within a few days,
you will see a difference, and all without a leash.
AND NO HARSH CORRECTIONS! What a happy way to get
your dog to do what you want. Try it, it’s fun!
